The 1856-C is among the scarcer Charlotte half eagles from this decade. Despite its scarcity, it sells for just a small premium over a common date and I regard it as an undervalued issue. Properly graded AU53 to AU55 examples are about as nice as this date is generally seen.
This fresh-to-the-market example shows splashes of rich orange-gold color with some pale blue undertones at the obverse border. The obverse is vibrant and shows some luster; the reverse is clean and well-detailed but not as vibrant.
Only five AU53 1856-C half eagles have been auctioned since 2006. The last sold was an NGC/CAC AU53 with nice color (but the detail of an EF45) which brought $3,055 at Heritage 11/14: 3291
For just three thousands bucks, this coin offers a lot of scarcity and eye appeal in one neat package.
