SLEEPER DATE 1854-O HALF EAGLE IN PCGS/CAC AU58: THE COINFACTS PLATE EXAMPLE
The 1854-O is the second most available No Motto half eagle from New Orleans but it is conditionally scarce. It is legitimately rare in properly graded AU58 and it is very rare in Uncirculated with no more than seven or eight accounted for.
This sharply struck slider is frosty and original with nice natural green-gold color accentuated by some natural coppery splashes at the right obverse. The wear is limited to the high spots of the obverse and the eye appeal is excellent for the date and grade.
Heritage 1/14: 6673, graded AU58 by PCGS but not CAC approved, sold for $3,537 and it was the only PCGS graded example to be auctioned in over a decade (!). An NGC AU58+ without CAC approval sold for $4,416 in April 2013.
If you could locate an Uncirculated 1854-O, it would cost at least double–if not triple–the amount of this exceptional PCGS/CAC AU58.
CAC has approved four in this grade with none finer.
