Serial Number 3294050-008
PCGS Lookup Number 8257
Variety 1. Sharp mintmark.
The 1854-C is the scarcest Charlotte half eagle from the 1850′s and very few of the comparatively higher grade pieces slabbed by PCGS and NGC have a clearly defined mintmark.
This is a clean, very pleasing original example with medium to deep green-gold color and dirt in the protected areas. I have seen inferior coins in EF45 holders and it should be stressed that this issue is exceedingly hard to find with original surfaces and a strong mintmark.
The last EF40 1854-C half eagle with a sharp mintmark to sell at auction was Heritage 7/08: 3020 which realized a strong $3,738.
If you are a serious collector of Charlotte half eagles, you realize just how hard it is to find this date with good eye appeal.
CAC has approved two in this grade with two finer (both AU50).
