Medium D mintmark (designated as such by PCGS). Variety 29-W. Rare.
Virtually all 1853-D half eagles are found with a Large D mintmark. The Medium D is found on just on variety and it is likely that well under 5% of all 1853-D are from this die pair. PCGS has graded none finer than AU53 and only seven in all grades as of April 2013.
This is a very choice example for the grade and variety with choice surfaces and natural medium green-gold color with some reddish flashes outlining the devices. With just a bit more luster present, I could see this coin easily grading at least an AU53.
The only finer example to sell at auction in many years is a PCGS AU58 which brought $5,463 as Stacks Bowers’ 2011 ANA: 9411.
