Bass Collection pedigree.
The 1853-C is one of the more available Charlotte half eagles but it is not easy to locate in properly graded AU55 with natural color and choice surfaces.
This rich yellow-gold example shows some slightly deeper hues in the fields. It is well detailed with a sharp mintmark; a good amount of luster can be seen on both sides and it has the appearance of a coin which has never been processed as so many have.
The last PCGS AU55 to sell at auction was ex Heritage 5/09: 1664 which brought $3,220. No CAC approved AU55 examples have ever sold at auction.
This is a much tougher date in this grade than most collectors realized, as one can determine from its low CAC approval numbers.
CAC has approved two in this grade with three finer.
Ex Bass IV: 426 where it realized $2,900.
