The 1851-D is the fifth rarest of 26 half eagles from this mint. In spite of its rarity, it is generally overlooked, even by specialists. It is one of the hardest D mint gold coins to find with original color and choice surfaces.
This coin seems undergraded to me by at least 5 if not 10 points. It has immaculate smooth surfaces with splendid green-gold and deep purplish splashes. The strike is sharp and the mintmark is bold.
If you buy coins solely based on price guides, this piece seems expensive but it is remarkable quality for the date and grade and would be hard to replace.
CAC has approved this one in VF25 with only six finer.
