SOLD- $5.00 – 1851-D PCGS AU55
Serial Number 8248.55/50127034
PCGS Lookup Number 8248
Variety 31-V.
The 1851-D is one of the scarcer half eagles from this mint and it is rare in properly graded AU55 and above. Some of the higher graded pieces in PCGS and NGC holders have a weak mintmark and examples that are well-defined are not often seen. I rank it as the fifth rarest issue overall and the third rarest in high grades.
This uncommonly well-defined example shows medium golden-green color with sharp centers and a bold mintmark. As is typical for the issue, there are some abrasions seen on the surfaces, including a few on the cheek of Liberty and in the field above the eagle’s head.
The last PCGS AU55 example to sell at auction was all the way back in November 2006. Since 2008, there have been four NGC AU55′s, ranging in price from a low of $3,819 to a high of $4,313.
Date collectors of Dahlonega half eagles are well aware of the fact that the 1851-D is infrequntly seen above AU55.
