Although it doesn’t get a big premium in the EF range, the 1851-C is much scarcer than the 1847-C through 1850-C and the 1852-C through 1853-C half eagles. IT is extremely difficult to find with natural color and pleasing surfaces.

This very high end example shows deep natural green-gold color which is exactly the proper shade for this issue. It is well struck with enough detail to suggest an AU50 grade. There is a short, squiggly scrape on the obverse between stars eight and nine and a small reeding mark on the reverse adjacent to the upper arrowhead.

The last PCGS EF45 example to sell at auction was ex DLRC 6/09: 879 and it brought $2,145. That coin was not approved by CAC and it is the only record for an 1851-C in PCGS EF45 since 2007.

A great coin for the date collector working on a set of choice EF/AU Charlotte half eagles.

CAC has approved three in this grade with four finer.
