The 1850 is the fourth scarcest pre-Civil War Liberty Head half eagle from the Philadelphia mint after the 1842 Small Letters, 1842 Large Letters and the 1859. Despite its scarcity, this date is overlooked and, in my opinion, highly undervalued. It is not often seen in AU58 and almost never with natural color and choice surfaces.
This extremely choice slider has no real wear but just a few too many light scuffs in the fields to qualify as Uncirculated. It shows natural orange-gold color and this is very unusual as most 1850 half eagles have been dipped or brightened. A small natural toning spot near the middle of Liberty’s neck serves as immediate identification.
No CAC approved 1850 half eagles in AU58 have sold at auction in recent years. A nice non-CAC NGC AU58 realized $2,185 as Heritage 3/12: 4055.
CAC has approved four in this grade and only one finer.
