The 1850-D is the fourth scarcest half eagle from this mint. The typical specimen, regardless of the grade, has poor eye appeal and is often bright and scuffy. Examples with choice surfaces and natural color are extremely hard to locate.
This is one of the most pleasing 1850-D half eagles I have owned and it shows lovely deep natural reddish-gold color, especially in the reverse fields. To me, this coin looks much better than the assigned grade and there is enough original luster and “skin” to consider this as a 50 or even a bit higher.
A nice NGC EF45 without CAC approval sold for $2,644 as HA 10/13: 26434. No EF45 with CAC approval has ever crossed the auction block.
