In terms of overall rarity, the 1846-O half eagle is likely a scarcer issue than its 1846-C and 1846-D counterparts yet it has the lowest price tag of the trio. Choice EF pieces would seem to be plentiful based on the number graded but auction results tell another story as does my personal experience.
This fresh to the market example is very high end for the grade and it shows the detail of an AU50. Both the obverse and reverse are free of significant marks and are covered with appealing natural russet hues; the reverse more so than the obverse. A bit of natural dirt is caked into the recesses of the reverse.
The only PCGS EF45 to sell at auction since March 2009 realized $2,291 as Stacks Bowers 5/13: 2291 and it was not CAC approved.
CAC has approved three in this grade with 12 finer.
