Normal Mintmark. Variety 15-H.
The 1846-D Normal mintmark is the fifth rarest Dahlonega half eagle in higher grades. It is rare in properly graded AU55 and extremely rare in Uncirculated with just four or five currently accounted for. It is one of the rarest D mint half eagles to find with natural color and choice surfaces.
This medium green-gold example shows very little actual wear and has nice, even hues on the obverse and reverse. It is well struck and lightly marked with no seriously detracting abrasions seen on either side. The eye appeal is far above average for the issue.
Only one slabbed AU55 example of this issue has sold at auction since 2006. Heritage 4/12: 6590, encapsulated by NGC, brought $4,313. While nice for the grade it wasn’t CAC approved or as choice overall as the current example.
I regard the 1846-D Normal Mintmark has one of the more undervalued half eagles from this mint and this is among the nicer examples I have handled in the last two or three years.
CAC has approved three in this grade with two finer.
