The 1846-C is the second scarcest half eagle from this mint after the 1842-C Small Date. It is typically seen in VF-EF grades and not often with natural color and surfaces.

This deeply toned example has an appearance which is suggestive of the coin having resided in either a leather pouch or an old wood coin cabinet for many years. Both sides show intense reddish-gold hues which are a bit deeper on the obverse; the reverse is a bit more green-gold in color and has a good amount of dirt in the recesses. There are a few marks near the bridge of the nose in the left obverse field and some contact marks on the reverse above the right wing.

There are no auction records for an 1846-C in this grade. In July 2012, Heritage sold a PCGS F12, approved by CAC, for $1,495.

This coin has been off the market for many years and it represents an unusual opportunity to acquire a respectable example of this scarce date for an affordable price.
