UBER-CRUSTY UNCIRCULATED 1844-D HALF EAGLE
Variety 11-G.
The 1844-D is one of the more available early date Dahlonega half eagles. It is, of course, a scarce issue in Uncirculated with around a dozen known, mostly in the MS60 to MS61 range. The finest I am aware of is the NGC MS64+ Duke’s Creek coin which brought $52,500 when it was sold as Pittman I: 970.
This fresh-to-the-market 1844-D is one of the crustiest half eagles from this mint which I have handled. Both sides are lustrous and toned in rich natural green-gold hues which change to orange at the borders. While a little on the scuffy side as is common for this date, this piece is so fresh and so original that it still must be regarded as a choice coin for the grade.
There have been three auction records for non-CAC PCGS MS61 1844-D half eagles in this last two years: $7,638 (6/15), $8,519 (6/14) and $8,813 (1/14).
A great type coin for the collector who would like to own a single higher grade half eagle from the fabled Dahlonega mint.
CAC has approved two in this grade with two finer (MS62 and MS64).
