The 1844-D is among the more available Dahlonega half eagles from this era although it is harder to locate than either the 1843-D or the 1845-D. It is available in the lower to middle AU grades with some regularity but locating an example with original color and surfaces is very difficult.
This fresh to the market example has extremely nice rich reddish-gold and orange color atop choice, unblemished surfaces. The strike is razor sharp and the appearance is excellent for the date and the grade. In fact, this is the nicest circulated 1844-D half eagle that I have offered in some time.
Another NGC AU55 1844-D with CAC approval sold for $4,230 as Heritage 4/15: 6190.
This is a perfect coin for the collector seeking a single choice Dahlonega half eagle for a type set or it is nice enough for an advanced date set of D mint fives.
CAC has approved two in this grade with seven finer.
