Small Letters variety.
1843-O half eagles are known with a Small Letters and Large Letters reverse. The Small Letters is considerably scarcer and it is, in fact, one of the scarcer No Motto New Orleans half eagles. It is likely that no more than 100-125 are known and many are seen in lower grades.
Housed in an older pre-barcode holder, this example seems more like an AU50 (or slightly finer) by today’s standards. A good deal of luster can be seen on both the obverse and the reverse and while there are scattered marks–including a few contact marks in front of Liberty’s chin–the surfaces are acceptable for the issue.
Only two PCGS EF45 examples of this variety have crossed the auction block since September 2009.
This variety remains one of the best values in the entire New Orleans half eagle series.
CAC has approved just this one coin in EF45 with only one finer. Only three have been approved for the date.
