The Large Letters is the more available of the two varieties of half eagle produced at the New Orleans mint in 1843-O. It is seen most often in the VF-EF range and About Uncirculated examples are hard to locate, especially with natural color and choice surfaces.
This coin is fresh to the market and it exhibits nice natural medium russet-gold and natural greenish hues on both sides. In terms of remaining luster and natural “skin,” this coin is better than a 50 but it is a late die state with some weakness on the reverse at RICA in AMERICA which should not be confused with wear.
Only three PCGS AU50′s have sold at auction since 2006 and none of these were CAC approved.
In this grade, the 1843-O Large Letters is much scarcer than the 1843-C or 1843-D half eagles yet it sells for a lower price.
CAC has approved just one in this grade with eight finer.
