THE FANTASTICALLY TONED LITTLEJOHN 1841-C HALF EAGLE
Variety 1.
The 1841-C is one of the scarcer Charlotte half eagles both in terms of overall and high grade rarity. While sometimes available in EF and the lower AU grades, most examples graded as such suffer from poor eye appeal as a result of mishandling and numismatic abuse.
This coin is well-known in the specialist community as being one of the prettiest 1841-C half eagles (if not THE prettiest) in existence. It shows superb deep magenta toning on the obverse; the reverse is a more even orange-gold but is also very attractive. The detail and remaining luster suggest a grade closer to 50 than 45 and the eye appeal is exceptional for the date.
The only CAC approved EF45 1841-C half eagle to sell at auction brought $3,450 as Heritage 7/12: 4851. While in an old green label holder, the surfaces were somewhat rough and had “problems.”
If you collect rare date gold and you appreciate great color, you will want this neat 1841-C half eagle in your collection!
CAC has approved six in this grade with another 10 higher.
Ex Boosi and RYK collections; obtained by me from the famous Littlejohn collection, where it sold as Lot 578. The original auction sticker is still on back of the slab.
