The 1840-O half eagle is numismatically significant as the first issue of this denomination to be made at the New Orleans mint. It is relatively available in EF grades but it is not often seen with natural color and choice surfaces.
This piece is characterized by its exceptional deep reddish-gold and steel-blue colors which are slightly different in hue on the obverse and reverse. It is possible that this coin was stored in a leather pouch or, more possibly, in an old wood cabinet and this imparted deep, vibrant color which makes it a special coin.
I am charging a significant premium for this coin due to its eye appeal but I believe that once you see it you will agree it would be hard to duplicate at double the price.
CAC has approved two in this grade with 11 finer.
