This is a numismatically significant issue as the first half eagle produced at the New Orleans mint. The 1840-O is an overlooked issue which is not easily located in properly graded AU53 to AU55, especially if not processed and scrubby in appearance.
This is a pleasing example with medium green-gold color and a good deal of remaining luster. There are no significant marks noted and the strike is typical for the issue with some softness on the radial lines of the stars and the centers.
A PCGS AU53 sold for $2,233 as Heritage 3/14: 10612 and I believe that the present piece is nicer.
The 1840-O compares favorably to the 1840-C and 1840-D half eagles yet it is still priced at a considerably lower level.
