Varieties of 1840-P half eagle are known with Wide and Narrow Milling. In my experience, the former is many times scarcer but, unfortunately, the grading services don’t seem to recognize these two clear, important varieties.
This coin is choice and original with pleasing deep, unmolested green-gold color on the obverse and reverse. A spot of dirt over the O in OF identifies the reverse and there is a large die crack from the rim right of the A in STATES down into the right corner of the shield.
A PCGS AU55 with CAC approval brought $1,495 and it was the more common Narrow Mill variety.
CAC has approved five in this grade with 13 higher and they do not recognize this variety.
