The 1840-D is numismatically significant as the first year of issue for half eagles with the modified obverse and the placement of the mintmark on the reverse. As a date, the 1840-D is scarce in all grades and it is especially hard to locate in collector grades with nice color and non-abraded surfaces.
This is a pleasing example with natural medium green-gold color changing to russet at the borders. The detail is excellent for the grade with sharp centers and full radial lines in the stars. The surfaces are abraded but less so than usual for the issue and none are deep or detracting.
Only one PCGS EF45 has sold at auction since September 2009 and it brought $3,173 as Heritage 3/14: 10611; the low price was a result of the coin having a large scratch on the reverse.
A nice 1840-D for the date collector who is working on an EF40 to AU50 set of D mint half eagles.
