The 1837 is the most difficult Classic Head half eagle to locate. It is seen from time to time in EF and AU grades but almost never with natural color and surfaces.
This example has the best color I can recall having seen on a circulated 1837 half eagle. Both the obverse and reverse have acquired superb deep russet color with reddish tinges which are a bit more pronounced on the obverse than on the reverse. This is the sort of coin that if it were a common date Morgan Dollar would command a huge premium for its superlative hues.
There are only four auction records for this date in PCGS EF45 since the middle of the 2000′s and none of these coins even remotely compares with the current example.
A great Classic Head half eagle for the sophisticated collector who appreciates rich natural color.
CAC has approved four in this grade with 29 finer.
