The 1836 is a slightly harder date to locate in the popular Classic Head half eagle series. It is not easy to find choice, original pieces in affordable collector grades.
This lustrous, lightly marked example shows pleasing medium green gold color which is “right” for the date. I have seen inferior examples in AU55 holders.
Of the last 10 sold at auction (since the beginning of 2012) only two have been graded by PCGS and just one, ex Goldberg 2/12: 1470 at $1,725, has been CAC approved.
CAC has approved four in this grade with 33 finer.
