Classic Head variety, Plain 4.

This is by far the most available date in the entire Classic Head half eagle. But as the picky type collector can attest, locating a really fresh original example in the higher AU grades is not an easy task. Most AU55 and AU58 1834 half eagles have been dipped or processed.

This is essentially an MS62 coin that has been graded AU58 due to just a touch too much friction on the obverse. It has a considerable amount of luster and nice surfaces with pleasing lemon-gold centers that change to reddish gold at the rims; the reverse is a bit lighter in hue than the obverse.

Of the last 20 examples graded AU58 which have been sold at auction, only three were graded by PCGS and just one, ex Stacks Bowers 7/13: 5154 at $2,115, was approved by CAC.

This is among the nicer AU58 Classic Head half eagles of any date that I have seen and it is a perfect piece for the type collector seeking a special coin at an affordable price.

CAC has approved 30 in this grade with 23 finer.
