Capped Head Left half eagles with a large diameter were made from 1813 through 1829. Contained in this group are some of America’s rarest early gold coins. The 1813 is the most common date of this design and this makes it perfect for use as a type representative.
This is a very choice and fully original example with even green-gold color which is deepest in the reverse fields. There is minimal wear confined to the high spots and the surfaces are extremely clean save for a small old scratch on the cheek and a few light scuffs in the left obverse field. This coin has a great overall “look” and it is not easy to find an 1813 in this grade/price range with this degree of eye appeal.
The last PCGS AU55 example to sell at auction was a non-CAC coin, ex Heritage 1/14: 6614, which realized $9,988. A nicer example in a PCGS AU55 holder, also without a CAC sticker, sold for $10,575 as Heritage 9/13: 6763.
If you have been searching for a nice Capped Head Left half eagle for type purposes, you should give this exceptional piece some serious consideration.
CAC has approved two in this grade with 47 finer.
