Old Green Holder. Conservatively graded by today’s standards and, in my opinion, an MS61.
BD-1, R-3.
The 1813 is numismatically significant as the first-year-of-issue for the rare Capped Head Left type which was struck from this year through 1834. The 1813 is far and away the most available date of this coveted type, making it very in-demand among type collectors.
This piece was graded many years ago and it has an interesting appearance. It is clearly original with near complete mint frost, lovely natural yellow-gold color and choice surfaces. What little “rub” there is on the coin is seen right at the center of the obverse on the jaw of Liberty. It is likely that this piece was housed for many years in an old coin album or cabinet and it received some friction on the highest spot of the obverse. Still, it is clearly the equal (if not the better) of most I have seen in MS61 or even MS62 holders.
The last AU58 1813 half eagle to sell at auction was a non-CAC slabbed by NGC which realized $10,281. The present example is obviously worth considerably more on account of its superior quality.
If you have been patiently waiting for an example of this type to add to your early gold holdings, I’d suggest you strongly consider this piece as it checks a lot of boxes!
CAC has approved seven in this grade with 39 higher.
