Large Date, Large 5. BD-4, R-2.

There are multiple varieties of half eagle dated 1810 and the Large Date, Large 5 is one of the two most available. It is seen in AU grades but rarely with original color and surfaces.

This is an exceptional coin for the grade with very deep green-gold color which turns to a russet hue in the fields. The originality is undeniable and it is likely that this is one of the few circulated 1810 half eagles which have never been cleaned or dipped at least once. I could easily see this coin in an AU55 holder and really the only things “wrong” with it are a few light marks in the left obverse field and some ultra-fine mint-made adjustment marks on the face.

There have been no PCGS AU53 examples of this date and variety sold at auction since three examples brought $7,475, $7,188 and $7,475 in 2009.

This is one of the most cosmetically appealing circulated early gold coins I have handled in some time and it is a great type coin for the collector who appreciates the utmost in originality.

CAC has approved five in this grade with 40 finer.
