BD-1, R-4. Imperfect base of T in LIBERTY.

The 1803/2 is one of the more available dates in the Capped Bust Right half eagle type. It is popular with collectors due to its big, bold overdate and the fact that there were no perfect date half eagles made during this year. It is available in most circulated grades but has become hard to find with nice original color and surfaces.

This is a textbook coin for the grade with good detail and lovely medium to deep reddish-gold color which is more extensive on the reverse. The wear is even and gentle with no significant marks and a lack of adjustments or scratches.

The last PCGS EF40 1803/2 half eagle to sell at auction was Heritage 2/13: 4839 which brought $7,344 and while nice for the grade was not approved by CAC. The sight-unseen CoinPlex bid for this date in EF40 is $7,750.

This is just about the nicest available quality for this type at under $9,000 and early gold in this price and grade range has become very difficult to find.

CAC has approved two in this grade with 62 finer.
