BD-4, High R-4. This variety is easy to identify by the presence of reverse cuds at 12:00 and 1:00.
An estimated 5,000-7,000 examples of this variety were produced out of nearly 25,000 Heraldic half eagles dated 1798. This is one of only two reasonably affordable half eagles of this type dated in the 1790′s and, as a result, the 1798 (and the 1799) are extremely popular with collectors.
This medium green-gold example shows a typical strike for the date with some flatness seen at the centers. However, there is a decent amount of luster present on both sides and the surfaces are clean and choice with no significant marks or adjustments.
The last two AU50 examples of this date/variety to sell at auction brought $12,363 (a low end NGC coin) and $13,800 (a so-so quality PCGS coin), respectively.
18th century gold coins are in great demand among a multitude of collectors and this affordable 1798 half eagle should be of interest.
