SCARCE 1869 THREE DOLLAR
Only 2,500 business strikes were made and unlike some of the later-date Threes, the 1869 saw circulation and is a scarce coin in higher grades.
This clean, evenly worn example is characterized by flashes of rich natural orange-gold color about the borders and the devices. With the exception of a small, squared-shaped mark in the lower right obverse, this piece has extremely clean fields.
The last time a PCGS EF40 example of this date sold at auction was all the way back in 2000.
For less than $2,000 it is hard to imagine many decidedly scarcer (or more attractive) 19th century U.S. gold coins available to the sophisticated collector with a somewhat limited budget.
