The 1888 is one of the more available Type Three dollars and it is seen even in MS67. I have seen just two or three PCGS MS68’s even though the population report for this service says that they have graded five as such.
This is a virtually perfect coin and one that I really thought had a good chance to grade MS68. It is fully struck, very lustrous and nicely toned in natural orange-gold and greenish hues. This is currently the only 1888 gold dollar graded MS67+ by PCGS.
The last PCGS MS67 1888 gold dollar to sell at auction was Heritage 12/11: 4391, which brought $4,025.
CAC has approved 45 examples in MS67 with only two finer (both MS68).
