RARE 1877 THREE DOLLAR, PCGS AU55
The 1877 is the second rarest business strike Three Dollar from Philadelphia after the 1873. There were just 1,468 produced of which fewer than 200 are known. This date is not often seen in grades higher than AU55 to AU58 and most of the pieces I see have terrible eye appeal as a result of severe cleanings or harsh stripping-n-dipping.
Examples of this date are often semi-prooflike but this piece tends more towards a satiny luster with some reflectivness in the recesses. Both sides are clean for the date and grade with the only describable mark seen being a shallow reeding mark on the cheek of Liberty. The color is a pleasing natural medium russet and this is a pleasing exception to the rule that this date is “never seen” with a nice appearance.
In the last seven years, only three PCGS AU55 1877 Threes have sold at auction. The most recent record is $12,992 in 2015; records of $13,225 and $13,800 were seen in 2012 and 2009, respectively.
A pleasing example of a rare, relatively unheralded date.
