POPULAR CIVIL WAR ISSUE 1863 THREE DOLLAR
Only 5,000 examples of the 1863 were issued for circulation. This date is among the more available of the five Civil War Threes but it is not often seen in affordable collector grades. Most have been cleaned or processed.
This russet-toned example has been spared the indignities which have befallen most Civil War Threes and it shows a number of clashmarks as often found on this date. A small scratch between the E and D in UNITED is hard to notice without 5x magnification.
The last AU53 example to sell at auction brought $3,819 as Heritage 2/14: 5248; it was graded by NGC. Only one PCGS AU53 has sold since 9/11 and it realized $3,525 as Heritage 11/13: 4613.
Great value at under $4,000 and a nice example of this scarce, historic issue.
