The 1874-CC is one of the more available Trade Dollars from the fabled Carson City mint but it is very scarce in properly graded MS63 and very rare above this. Examples which have not been dipped and with choice surfaces are extremely hard to locate.
This frosty white example shows light natural golden-orange color on the obverse and similar but slightly deeper hues on the reverse. The surfaces are very clean with just a few shallow scuffs in the upper right obverse field. The strike is slightly weak on the eagle’s left leg but all other details are full and bold. This coin clearly hasn’t been scrubbed or mishandled and it is high end for the grade.
Two PCGS MS63 1874-CC Trade Dollars with CAC approval have been auctioned. The first brought $7,344 as Heritage 3/13: 3736 while the second sold for $7,050 as Heritage 10/12: 4660.
An excellent type coin for the collector who wants a choice Trade Dollar from Carson City.
CAC has approved five in this grade with six finer.
