In Uncirculated, the 1894-S is the rarest post-1877 half eagle produced at the san Francisco mint. It is sometimes seen in MS60 to MS61 but properly graded MS62′s are very scarce while this date is rare in MS63 and very rare above this.
This fresh-to-the-market example was just acquired by me from a collector who purchased the lovely PCGS/CAC MS63 I listed on my website a few weeks ago. This piece is bright and frosty with a few more marks in the fields than on the MS63 I sold. The obverse is choice and attractive; the reverse shows a faint mint-made grease stain above the E in FIVE and on into the branch.
No CAC approved PCGS MS62 1894-S half eagle has ever sold at auction. An NGC/CAC MS62 brought $4,994 and it was not as choice, in my opinion, as the present example.
Excellent value at under $5,000 and among the finest 1894-S half eagles I have handled.
CAC has approved two in this grade with two finer MS63 and MS69).
