The Philadelphia half eagles struck after 1887 get little attention from collectors but there are a few tough issues, foremost of which is the 1890. There were a scant 4,250 business strikes produced. The survival rate for this date is a bit higher than one might expect due to pieces being found overseas but it remains very scarce in Uncirculated with fewer than two dozen known, mostly in the MS60 to MS61 range.
This orange-gold example shows nice soft, frosty luster with an especially choice reverse. There are a few marks on the surfaces which are consistent with the assigned grade.
The last NGC MS61 example to sell at auction was Heritage 1/13: 7246 which brought $2,703. There have been a total of four MS61s, all slabbed by NGC, sold at auction since late 2004.
