Only 45 Proofs struck; as few as 15-18 are known today with most in the PR63 to PR64 range. This date is rare as a business strike as well which adds desirability to Proofs. For some reason, Deep Cameo examples are exceedingly rare and this is the only 1889 half eagle designated as a Deep Cameo by this service.
This is a remarkable borderline Gem example which would surely qualify as a PR65DCAM were it not for a small hairline in the right field. The rest of the coin is superb with no notable hairlines, great contrast and watery, unmolested surfaces.
The last Proof 1889 half eagle to sell was the ex Amon Carter coin, graded PR65CAM by NGC, which sold for $29,900 as Heritage 11/11: 5132. In my opinion, the present example is nicer and it is clearly one of the two or three finest known for the date.
If you collect Proof gold or if you just like really cool, really rare coins, this piece is worthy of strong consideration.
