Slightly fewer than 13,000 half eagles dated 1883-CC were struck and it is likely that not more than 125-150 are known, mostly in the VF-EF range. In collector grades, this issue is typically seen with harsh cleanings and/or unnatural color and choice VF and EF examples with original color and nice surfaces are scarce.
This orange-gold example is evenly worn and attractive with very clean surfaces and good overall detail. Some coppery toning can be seen at the date and across some of the reverse border.
No PCGS VF30 has sold at auction. The closest comparable is HA 2/15: 7835, graded VF25 by NGC and not approved by CAC, which sold for $1,821.
This is the nicest available quality for the date at under $3,000.
CAC has approved this one coin in VF30 with 14 finer.
