The 1877-CC half eagle is a harder coin to locate than the 1871-CC and 1874-CC and it compares favorably to the more highly valued 1872-CC and 1875-CC. There are an estimated 100-125 known with most in the VF-EF range. Choice EF’s are not often seen and even less frequently with natural color and choice surfaces.
This is one of the few truly original EF45 examples of this date that I have seen in years. It shows deep, even orange-gold and greenish hues on the obverse and reverse and it is well detailed with a better than average strike. The surfaces are quite clean and there are none of the usual deep, detracting marks. The eye appeal s far better than usual for the date.
The last two APR’s for PCGS EF45 1877-CC half eagles are $5,463 in 2012 and $7,475 in 2011; neither of these was approved by CAC.
Better date Carson City half eagles are currently in demand, especially in the $5,000-7,500 price range.
CAC has approved one in this grade with four finer.
