As with the half dime, dime and quarter of this year, the 1868-P half dollar is an overlooked issue which becomes scarce in MS63 and it is rare above this. The finest known is a single MS67 graded by PCGS; there are around three or four in the MS65 range and the finest that has sold recently is the Gardner III: 98483 coin, graded MS65 by NGC and approved by CAC, which brought a shade under $10,000.

This very sharply struck frosty white example shows some orange-gold color at the obverse border. There are a few scuffs on the obverse which limit the grade while the reverse on its own is a full MS65 if not finer.

No PCGS MS63 has sold at a major auction since 1999.

Extremely good value as are so many Seated half dollars from the 1860′s and 1870′s.
