The 1865 is a popular issue in the No Motto Seated half dollar series. It is the final Philadelphia issue of this type and it is included in the Civil War issues which are avidly collected in all series. Gems are extremely scarce.
This frosty example has wonderful eye appeal. It is very lightly toned with a dusting of champagne color but it has not been dipped as indicated by the bold, unbroken satiny luster on both sides. There are a few minor scuffs in the left obverse field and clashmarks can be seen on both sides.
No PCGS MS65 examples of this date have sold at auction since Heritage 1/08: 1563 brought $6,900. In the Stacks Bowers 7/13 sale, a CAC approved PCGS MS66 brought a strong $22,325.
A wonderful example of a historically important condition rarity.
CAC has approved just one in this grade with five finer.
