PCGS Lookup Number 6249
WB-106. Tripled Date; variety not recognized by PCGS.
The 1845-O, like most of the New Orleans half dollars of this era, is a condition rarity. While sometimes available in MS60 to MS62, it is rare in MS63, very rare in MS64 and extremely rare in Gem.
This lovely example is mostly white with a veil of pale champagne-gold color which deepens at the final star. The strike is sharp and this coin is very choice for the grade with some small scuffs in the upper left obverse field removing it from consideration as a Gem.
This variety is well-known amongst specialists and this specific coin is regarded as the finest known 1845-O Triple Date. It is clearly visible to the naked eye and while not quite as spectacular as the 1844-O Double Date, it is very impressive.
Another PCGS MS64 example of this date with CAC approval sold for $8,813 in Stacks Bowers 2013 ANA auction and a non-CAC PCGS MS64 brought $5,463 as Stacks Bowers 11/11: 2329.
CAC has approved two in this grade with none finer.
