UNDERRATED CHOICE UNCIRCULATED 1841 HALF DOLLAR
WB-102. Repunched 18 in date.
The 1841 is a scarce date in Uncirculated with around two to three dozen known. Most are in the MS60 to MS62 range and properly graded MS63 to MS64 coins are rare. Only one coin has been graded MS65 by PCGS and it recently sold for $11,750 in the Gardner III auction.
This is a really pleasing coin for the grade with a satiny obverse whose overall dove grey color is accentuated by bands of lilac and blue pastels; the reverse is a deeper grey with strong splashes of golden-orange, blue and red. The strike is extremely sharp for the issue and the surfaces are clean with just a few small well-scattered ticks in the fields. The eye appeal is very high end for the date.
Only one PCGS MS63 has sold at auction in over a decade and it realized $3,450 as Heritage 2010 ANA: 4948.
In a series full of undervalued dates, this choice No Motto half dollar offers excellent value for the date or type collector.
CAC has approved just this one coin in MS63 with only two finer (64, 65).
