The 1855 is among the more available half cents in Proof. Most examples graded PR64 are very low end and have noticeable spots, mint-made imperfections or irregular color. Choice, properly graded pieces are rare and, in my opinion, still undervalued.
This reflective brown example shows faded mint red at the obverse and reverse centers and this is framed by rich brown, greenish-gold and blue hues at the border. There are no signs of past cleaning(s) and the surfaces are free of spotting or made-made marks. The eye appeal is excellent.
No PR64 BN 1855 half cents with CAC approval have ever sold at auction. Heritage sold a nice PCGS PR64 for $5,750 as Lot 3038 in their 2011 ANA Sale.
Since last year’s sale of the Missouri Cabinet, Proof half cents have gained in popularity yet many of the later dates remain excellent values.
CAC has approved three in this grade/color with none finer.
