RARE AND UNDERVALUED 1867-S HALF EAGLE

I regard this date as one of the three most overlooked half eagles from this mint along with the 1858-S and the 1876-S. Under 100 are known from the original mintage of 29,000 and the typical 1867-S grades VF-EF with stripped surfaces and lots of chatter.

This is a textbook EF40 with good detail, lovely rose and green-gold color and smooth, even surfaces which lack all but the smallest marks.

The only PCGS EF40 1867-S half eagle with CAC approval to sell at auction realized $2,526 as Stacks Bowers 11/13: 3657.

This coin seems like great value at under $3,000.

CAC has approved four in this grade with three finer.
