Coin Description

SCARCE PCGS/CAC EF45 1857-D HALF EAGLE

Variety 41-HH.

The 1857-D is accorded little fanfare even by Dahlonega specialist but it is actually a scarcer date within this series. It is not often seen in grades higher than EF45 to AU50 and most survivors in this range are low end with poor eye appeal.

This light orange-gold example appears to have enough luster and detail to grade a bit higher than EF45. It is well struck and free of significant marks save for a few ticks in the left obverse. The reverse is clean, choice and fully AU.

The only other EF45 1857-D to ever be approved by CAC was an NGC coin which realized $2,875 as Heritage 3/10: 2323. No PCGS EF45′s have sold at auction since October, 2006.

CAC has approved two in this grade with six finer.
