CHOICE AU 1857-S EAGLE
Prior to the discovery of the S.S. Central America, the 1857-S eagle was unknown in Uncirculated and extremely rare in the higher AU grades. It remains a scarcer date than the 1854-S and 1856-S and there are around 125 or so known from the original mintage of 26,000/
Housed in an older pre-barcode blue label holder, this is a very lustrous example which shows light wear and fewer abrasions than normal for the issue. The strike is sharp and both the obverse and reverse show attractive natural medium orange-gold and rose coloration. A few light hairlines through the date are hard to see without magnification.
Three PCGS AU55′s have sold at auction in the last five years. Two non-CAC pieces brought $4,700 (in April 2015) and $4,600 (in January 2010) while a PCGS approved piece sold for $5,875 in February 2015.
An impressive early San Francisco eagle with great eye appeal.
