RARE PCGS/CAC MS63 1871-S QUARTER EAGLE
The 1871-S quarter eagle has an original mintage of 22,000 and it is usually seen in the EF-AU grade range. There are around a dozen or so known in Uncirculated with maybe four to six in MS63 and finer. The best I am aware of is a sensational PCGS MS66 which sold for $20,125 as Heritage 6/05: 7580.
This fresh-to-the-market example is boldly detailed and it shows lovely natural rose and green-gold color as is “right” for this issue. The strike is sharp and the luster is excellent, giving this piece excellent overall eye appeal. A few small ticks in the left obverse field limit the grade but this piece is truly choice.
No PCGS MS63 1871-S quarter eagle has sold at auction since early 2007.
If you collect San Francisco gold or if you appreciate choice examples of coins that don’t often come nice, you will appreciate this lovely piece.
CAC has approved one in this grade with only one finer (64).
