Old “Fatty” holder.
The 1863-S is the rarest collectible date in the San Francisco quarter eagle series, narrowly eclipsing the 1862-S. There are an estimated 60-70 known from an original mintage of just 10,800 pieces. When available–which is not often–the typical 1863-S grades EF40 to AU50.
This piece was graded many years ago and in resides in an old “fatty” NGC holder. It is pleasing for the date and grade with nice natural orange-gold color over lustrous, vibrant surfaces. The obverse has the detail and appearance of a full AU50 to AU53 while the reverse looks more EF-ish, primarily due to a weakness of strike.
Only two EF45′s have sold at auction since September 2005 and the last was a PCGS coin which brought $3,290 as Heritage 3/13: 4127.
In my opinion, this date represents among the better values in the entire Liberty Head quarter eagle series.
